What does "MGO" mean?
MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that differentiates Manuka honey from other honey and makes it so special. Our research partners, the scientists at TU Dresden, discovered methylglyoxal (MGO) as a key ingredient in Manuka honey. This was a great scientific breakthrough after many years of searching for the "mysterious Manuka factor".
In 2008, Manuka Health pioneered the development and introduction of the MGO certification of Manuka honey according to the TU Dresden method. It sets precise and scientifically reliable standards for evaluating the MGO content of Manuka honey.
Manuka Health's MGO certification means that every jar of honey in New Zealand is tested and certified for its MGO content, purity, and quality using Prof. Henle's method.
